Staff Augmentation

The primary goal of staff augmentation is to meet short-term or immediate needs for specialized skills, knowledge, or manpower without the long-term commitment and cost associated with hiring full-time employees.

Benefits of staff augmentation include

Temporary or Project-Specific placements

Companies typically engage in staff augmentation when they require additional resources for specific projects, seasonal demands, or to fill skill gaps.

Flexibility

Staff augmentation provides flexibility in scaling up or down quickly based on project requirements. It allows businesses to adapt to changing market conditions without the burden of permanent staff.

Expertise

Access a wide range of specialized skills and expertise, which don’t already exist in-house. This includes areas such as software development, design, marketing, data analysis, and more.

Reduced Overhead

Avoid the costs associated with onboarding, training, benefits, and full-time employment.

Faster Onboarding

Our professionals are experienced and can contribute to your team/project immediately, reducing the time needed for training and onboarding.

Staff augmentation engagements are typically 3-12 months, but we offer the flexibility to engage for as little or as long as organisations need. This allows companies to leverage external talent and resources strategically, enhancing their capabilities while maintaining operational flexibility and cost-effectiveness.

Our approach

We place experienced developers, designers and delivery people inside your team, working to your priorities, in your tools, at your standup. Not a black-box project team reporting back monthly: people you direct, who happen to be employed by us.

The honest pitch is narrow. Augmentation is the right model when the roadmap changes faster than a fixed scope can absorb, and the wrong one when you have a well-defined outcome and no internal capacity to direct the work. We will tell you which situation you are actually in.

When augmentation is the right model

Four signals, and you generally need at least two:

  • The roadmap moves monthly. Fixed scope prices certainty. If the work will change halfway through, you are paying for a contract that has to be renegotiated anyway.
  • You have someone to direct the work. A product owner, a tech lead, anyone who can prioritise. This is the requirement most often missing, and it is the one that decides whether augmentation succeeds.
  • You need a skill for months, not years. A React Native developer for one app cycle, an Adobe Commerce specialist for a replatform. Hiring for that is slow and leaves you with a role you cannot fill afterwards.
  • Capacity has to flex. Scaling up for a launch and back down after, without a restructure.

When it is the wrong model

When the outcome is well defined and you need someone to own it. A marketing site, a defined portal, a migration with a known shape. Buy that as a fixed-scope project and let the delivery partner carry the plan, the timeline and the risk.

When nobody internal can direct the work. Embedded developers need priorities. Without them you get activity rather than progress, and the cost of that lands on you rather than on us. If your tech lead just left, augmentation will not paper over it.

When you need one small change, once. Bringing anyone in to learn your codebase for a single ticket is a poor trade. Use whoever already knows it.

Augmentation, outsourcing or hiring

Three different purchases, and the distinction gets blurred by everyone selling one of them.

Hiring is right when the work is continuous and you can keep someone busy and learning. A permanent developer who knows your business is worth more than any external over a long enough horizon. It is also slow, and in Australia the market for senior commerce and PHP people is thin.

Outsourcing hands over a defined outcome and a single point of accountability. It works when the specification is stable. It struggles when requirements move, because every change is a variation.

Augmentation keeps direction with you and flexes capacity. You trade a single throat to choke for control and speed.

We have written the comparison up properly in staff augmentation vs outsourcing vs hiring, including the question that usually settles it.

What we solve

  • A roadmap that keeps moving while headcount approvals do not
  • A specialist skill needed for a phase, not permanently
  • Delivery capacity that has to scale for a launch and back down after
  • An in-house team that knows the business but not the platform
  • Recruitment that has been open for months against a thin senior market

What’s included

  • Developers, designers and delivery people embedded in your team and your tools
  • Engagements sized from part-time to a full squad, adjusted as the work changes
  • Australian business hours coverage, with a named point of contact
  • Code review and technical direction from the wider team behind whoever is placed
  • A defined exit: documentation and handover, so leaving does not cost you the knowledge

How it works in practice

Skills. PHP and Laravel, Adobe Commerce and Shopify, Next.js and React, React Native, Node, plus UX, design and QA. The useful part is rarely one person: it is that whoever is placed has the rest of a team behind them for the parts they have not met before.

Direction. You set priorities and they attend your ceremonies. We handle employment, cover, review and progression, which is the administrative half you would otherwise carry.

Sizing. Most engagements start with one person and adjust once the work is understood. Starting with a squad before anyone has seen the codebase is how budget gets spent on discovery nobody asked for.

Ending it. Every engagement should have a defined exit. If it is not working, we would rather know in week three than month six, and the arrangement that leaves you least dependent on us afterwards is the one we would recommend.

The Australian market context

Senior commerce and PHP hiring in Australia is slow and competitive, which is why augmentation gets used here more than the model’s reputation suggests. The pattern we see most often, and the one we would recommend, is not either extreme: one in-house developer who owns the system, with external capacity alongside for the hard parts and the peaks. It keeps the knowledge with you and buys speed where speed is worth paying for.

Common questions

How is augmentation different from outsourcing a project?

Augmentation adds people to your team who work to your priorities under your direction, you keep control and the knowledge stays with you. Outsourcing hands over a defined outcome and the partner owns the plan and the risk. Different purchases, suited to different situations.

How quickly can someone start?

Typically far faster than hiring. An augmented specialist joins a team that already has context and contributes within a week or two, against the months a permanent hire takes between advertising, notice periods and ramp-up.

Do we manage them, or do you?

You direct the work, priorities, backlog, standups, your tools and process. We handle employment, cover, progression and replacement if someone moves on. Augmentation works badly where there is nobody internal to own priorities; if that is your situation, buying an outcome is the better answer.

What if it is not working out?

Tell us and we will change it. The point of the model is flexibility in both directions, scaling back or swapping a person should not require a restructure or a renegotiation.

What skills can you provide?

Engineers across Laravel and PHP, Next.js and React, Node.js, React Native, and the commerce platforms, plus designers, QA and delivery. Our team spans Australia, Europe, the Philippines, the Middle East and the USA, so timezone overlap is usually solvable.

What does IT staff augmentation cost compared with hiring?

Higher per day and lower in total commitment, which is the trade you are actually buying. A permanent hire carries recruitment, on-costs, leave, equipment and the risk that the role outlasts the need. Augmentation carries none of those and no notice period at the end. Over a year of continuous work a permanent hire is usually cheaper. Over a three to six month phase, it is usually not, and the recruitment lead time alone can exceed the work.

Is augmentation only for developers?

No, though that is the most common ask. We place UX and design, QA, and delivery people as well, and the useful arrangement is often mixed: a developer alongside a designer for a phase of work rather than two of the same. The constraint is the same either way. Someone on your side needs to be setting priorities.

Do we get the same people throughout?

Yes, and you should insist on it with any provider. Continuity is most of the value: someone who has learned your codebase and your business is worth considerably more in month three than in week one. Rotating people to suit a supplier resourcing plan destroys exactly the thing you are paying for. Where we need to cover leave we brief a second person in advance rather than swapping cold.

How do you handle knowledge transfer when the engagement ends?

It is planned from the start rather than negotiated at the end. Work happens in your repository, documentation lands as it goes, and the exit includes a handover to whoever is picking it up. The test we would apply is simple: if the engagement stopped next month, could your team keep going? If the answer is no, the arrangement is wrong regardless of how the code looks.
